End of H2020 project PANOPTIS

PANOPTIS came to an end last May 31. The main goal of this H2020 project was to combine down-scale climate change scenarios with structural and geotechnical simulation tools, and with actual data from sensors (terrestrial and airborne) so as to provide the operators with an integrated tool able to support more effective management of their infrastructures at planning, maintenance and operation level. Such a tool was a holistic platform involving a wide range of models and data sources.

HYDS contribution was to develop a module of the PANOPTIS platform for real-time meteorological hazard assessment. The final goal of the developped module is to assist Road Operators towards avoiding potential negative impacts of weather-related hazards on the operation of critical RI. Such impacts normally differ a lot in terms of their nature and their intensity:

  • flash floods and landslides due to heavy rainfall
  • freezing/thawing cycles during extreme cold episodes o extreme wind loads on vehicles and light structure

The continuous monitoring and the prediction of a number of different meteorological variables forms a key point for:

  •  the proper training and preparedness of the road operators
  • decision making during extreme events
  • actions that need to be undertaken in order to increase the efficiency of the operation of RIs after extreme events

In order to help the management of emergency situations with the most updated information, this module offers access to real-time measurements and the most recent available forecasts. Products available are: weather stations data, precipitation nowcasting based on weather radars, NWP model forecasts and derived products.
